Our story

From a West Texas smokehouse to your table.

For Papaw's, barbecue has always meant more than a good meal. It's a reason to welcome people in.

How it started

A family tradition of food and welcome.

Growing up in West Texas, Leslie watched Mamaw and Papaw cook plenty of good food and welcome family and friends into their home to enjoy it. At church potlucks, she would always ask Mamaw which dishes she had made, because hers were the best, of course.

When Papaw was barbecuing, Mamaw would tell Leslie to stay inside so she would not smell like smoke. But she always found a way out to the backyard, where one of her favorite memories became watching and talking with Papaw beneath his makeshift smokehouse.

Passed down with care.

Leslie's dad carried on the tradition with his own starter smokehouse, adding new recipes to the culture of hospitality and delicious food their family was, and still is, known for. Whether it was a Super Bowl party, the Fourth of July, or no reason at all, family, old friends, new friends, and people they had never met were welcomed in, loved on, and served his take on Papaw's barbecue.

The next generation.

Monty and Leslie married in September 1994. From then on, their shared love of people, food, and bringing the two together became a favorite part of their life. As they say, when the house and the guests are full, their hearts are full.

From Papaw's heart, to Leslie's dad teaching his son-in-law how to do it right, to Monty's determination to get it right, that love has been passed on and added to with every generation.

“Every day's a holiday.Every night's a party.”
